The Fantastic Mr Fox Review

Okay, so I watched the movie "The Fantastic Mr. Fox" to me it was....adequate. I got a few chuckles out of it here and there, and it closed on a better note than I'd originally thought it would be. There were three things that upset me about the movie.

CONS:

1) The casting of the movie is HORRIBLE, especially George Clooney. George Clooney of all people to play Mr. Fox! Why? Mr. Fox is supposed to be british! Couldn't they have picked Hugh Laurie? Clive Owen? Michael Cane? Terry Gilliam? Or even Simon Pegg from Shaun of the Dead. Just someone freaking english, for the love of Uncle Kage and fox cubs!

Another problem is that many of the all star cast members are only glanced at. Actors like William Dafoe and Owen Wilson show up for like one or two times in the movie and then just disappear altogether.

2) The animation looks very off. It's often moving too fast or they're bodies look too often like taffy. They don't even move like actual people at times. The body structure of Mr. Fox and some of the other animals looked a little...silly, too. I mean, why is the hindpaw so vertically positioned? How could they actually walk on those stickly legs. That might have been the actual direction the movie was going for. Something cartoonish. It still doesn't quite seem my style, so this may largely be opinionated.

3) The focus of the story, Mr. Fox was rather unlikeable for the most part. It may have to do with the actor himself(GEORGE CLOONEY! ARRRRRGH!), but my problem with him is he's the typical father who's unhappy with a day-in, day-out job, and often spends more time trying to please himself, while complaining to his wife and neglecting his only son, Ash.

But to be fair, I'll say three things I actually liked about the movie.

PROS:

1) The son of Mr. Fox, Ash. I actually liked this character and I liked the actor. He was largely grumpy and frustrated, mostly due to the relationship with his dad. Of course, with the reputation Mr. Fox had, Ash has quite a large shadow looming over him. He often spends time reading comics, especially of this fictional superhero, the "White Cape", which he often fantasizes of being with the white cape he often wears around his neck. I don't know why, but that's just cool! They should've done a side story about that. :3

Though he tries as he might to be just like his father and gain his favor(which gets worse when his father's idolized nephew comes into the movie), he eventually become the apple of his father's eye by learning to just be himself. As Mrs. Fox said, "We're all different, him especially. But there's something fantastic about that, isn't there?"

And of course, there was the tense relationship between him and his cousin, kristofoss...whatever his name is. Ash is incredibly jealous of his cousin, competing against him for his father's affection. The cousin doesn't see it that way, however, and tries to just be friends with Ash. It's not until the end of it, though, that Ash has a change of heart and decides to become best friends with his cousin.

This is really who the movie should've focused on. A more three dimensional character played by a good actor(Whoever played him), and was a fox! :3 Plus he was cute when he was angry.

2) Mrs. Fox's paintings. In every one of her pictures, until the very end of it, she's always drawing pictures of farmlands during storms. Its ominous message of trouble's always ahead reflects her personality and her feelings towards her husband's relationship quite well and in a sense, contrasts with it. In a way it's quite funny and kind of sad at the same time.

But I guess in a way, that's what makes the two such a great couple. Mr. Fox is suave, bold and resourceful. Mrs. Fox, on the other hand, is skittish, cautious but kind.

3)Innovation and creativity were perhaps the movie's greatest strengths. Of course with animation, especially stop motion, that can get quite crazy like Coraline or the Nightmare before Christmas. What do I mean by this, specifically?

Well, there's the censorship in it, for instance. They not only censor moments of violence, nudity, and language rather well using their cartoonish elements, but they also make it sound silly. Instead of using actual profanity they use just "cuss". Why the cuss would they do that, those cussing cussers? They should be cussing strung up by their cusses and cussed multiple times with a cussing bat. ...Well, okay, maybe I only used it to that degree, but can you see how you couldn't take it seriously?

Another thing that was innovative about it like all of robert dahl's work is it's whimsical yet strange nature. Things like machinery to make super strong alcoholic cider, and turkey apples(don't ask), and even this one sport they called thwack ball. I don't know why, but even though it's ridiculously long and crazy, it looks quite fun.

hmmm...you know what? Seeing that I actually said more about the pros over the cons, I'm going to change my first statement of it. The Fantastic Mr. Fox was actually pretty good! :D I give a 3.25/5(THUMBS UP!)

SEE IT NOW AND BEHOLD THE MAGIC OF ANTHROS ANIMALS, FELLOW FURS!

Well, I saw the movie based on a kid's book I haven't seen since I was like...ten or so. For something based on a plotless book that was only like ten or so pages long, it actually did okay.

I won't spoil it for you though. :P

In the long run, I didn't feel upset over it. But I wasn't happy about it. And neither was I sad, confused or even empty inside about it. The movie itself seemed to embody everything about being a kid, from the whimsical, exciting and fun moments to the dark, melancholy and even violent parts of childhood.

After some thinking, though. I've decided I actually like it. It really makes me miss being a kid. Somehow, it almost feels like I lost a little of my inner child during my time in Utah. Don't any of you ever lose it.

I would totally recommend this movie to you dudes. And it's even given me an idea for a paicture. ;3
